ONLINE EVENT – NATIONAL RECOVERY AND RESILIENCE PLAN: INVESTING IN BUILDING RENOVATION FOR A CLIMATE NEUTRAL FUTURE

INZEB and GIZ are organising on Thursday, October 21st 2021 at 14.00(Athens time), the online event National Recovery and Resilience Plan: Investing in Building Renovation for a Climate Neutral Future. Supporting Partners of the event are the H2020 projects iBRoad2EPC and Triple-A as well as the Build Back Better Greece initiative, while the event is organised within the frame of the Renovate Europe Day 2021.

The event aims to highlight the importance of building renovation to achieving the EU’s long-term objective of a climate-neutral economy by 2050. Attention will be given to elements that can support the EU objective through the implementation of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.

Specifically, the online event will discuss:

Opportunities and challenges for the implementation of the investments in building renovation foreseen under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
Long-term strategies and targets for building renovation in Greece.
New requirements for building renovation at EU level under the “Fit-for-55” legislative package.
EU Taxonomy on Sustainable Financing as a means to define sustainable investments according to higher energy savings criteria.
Building Renovation Passports as an instrument for holistic, staged deep renovations working towards the avoidance of renovation lock-in effects.
One Stop Shops as a mechanism helping regional and local authorities to roll out appropriate renovation schemes and monitor and measure the renovation performances.

FIGHTING ENERGY POVERTY THROUGH INNOVATION. CHALLENGES, OPPORTUNITIES AND SOLUTIONS

The energy sector is currently undergoing a fundamental transition and shift towards CO2-neutral power generation and energy efficiency.

The European Green Deal published in December 2019, clearly mentions that the EU’s
energy supply needs to be secure and affordable for consumers and businesses. For
this to happen, it is essential to ensure that the European energy market is fully integrated, interconnected and digitalised, while respecting technological neutrality.

Climate change constraints as well as the recent coronavirus 2020 crisis are putting the global energy sector under the pressure of evolving and modernising at a rapid pace and on an uncommonly large scale.

Thus, can energy poverty be tackled through innovation? And if so, what are the challenges?

The answers to the above questions can be found in the publication “Fighting Energy Poverty through Innovation. Challenges, opportunities and solutions”, which is an initiative of INZEB in collaboration with Blockchain Leaders, AUTh, Future Energy Foundation and CLuBE.

“COMPLETED SET OF GENERAL SOLUTIONS FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY COOPERATIVES” – REPORT

The report of the CONGREGATE project on energy communities and energy cooperatives “Completed Set of General Solutions for Renewable Energy Cooperatives” is now published. The report is result of the collaboration between Center for Energy Efficiency EnEffect (Bulgaria), SEVEn (Czech Republic), and INZEB (Greece).
The current report sets the foundation for the development of a common framework enabling the mass roll-out of energy cooperatives in the three countries which are particularly engaged in this area under the CONGREGATE project – Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Greece. It starts with a review of the current state of play regarding the EU legislation and its implementation at national level, analysing the existing good practices, identifying gaps and obstacles, and setting expectations for immediate improvements in each of the countries. Then, the technological potential for renewable energy production is outlined in relation to the emerging practices of energy cooperatives, employing different organisational and legal forms and adapted to various economic targets and conditions.

About the CONGREGATE project
CONGREGATE project ‘s primary objective is to support the implementation of national long-term renovation strategies in Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia and motivate municipalities in Bulgaria, Czech Republic and Greece to develop public-private partnerships in order to increase the share of renewable energy in the local energy mixes. The main benchmarks that will define the overall objective are the development of National models for systematic multi-level communication and an engagement campaign in support of building renovation, along with policy recommendations and feasibility studies for renewable energy cooperatives.

CONGREGATE project is part of the European Climate Initiative (EUKI) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU). It is the overarching goal of the EUKI to foster climate cooperation within the European Union (EU) in order to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.

WRAP-UP OF THE ONLINE WORKSHOP “ENERGY POVERTY – A MULTIDIMENSIONAL PHENOMENON”

The online workshop “Energy Poverty – A Multidimensional Global Phenomenon” was held on Tuesday March 9^th, 2021 and it was organised by the University of Bahrain, INZEB and the EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network. Its aim was to raise awareness in regards to energy poverty, to analyse the terms energy poverty and energy vulnerability, to discuss the different factors that result to the increase of energy poverty levels in different regions and present EU initiatives aiming to support households and the society in mitigation of the social problem.

Prof. Riyad Y Hamzah, President, University of Bahrain, did the welcome remarks, highlighting the importance of this workshop in addressing the issue of energy poverty.

Dr. Mustapha Taoumi, Energy Technology Key Expert, EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network, in his opening speech pointed out that energy poverty is a phenomenon affected by multiple factors and observed not only in developing but also in developed countries.

Then, Alice Corovessi, Managing Director, INZEB, took the floor and explored in depth the factors that affect energy poverty. She also presented the facts concerning energy poverty and how they differ in developed and in emerging countries. As she stated, “Around 20% of global population is deprived of access to electricity, reflects the prevalence of energy poverty on global scale & the magnitude of the issues stemming from this situation.”

Dr. Haris Doukas, Assoc. Professor, National Technical University of Athens, stressed out through his presentation that the collective approach fostered by energy communities and/or crowdfunding, is suitable for the enormous challenges faced by citizens suffering from energy poverty who wish to take action to reduce their energy consumption or improve the energy efficiency of their households. He also demonstrated that “The more energy consumes, the more vulnerable you might be in the future.”

The next presenter was Kyriaki Metaxa, Program Coordinator, Ecology, Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Greece, and she highlighted that combined efforts concentrated on promoting rational energy consumption, on ameliorating buildings’ energy efficiency and on supporting community energy, indirectly boost citizens’ income and address energy poverty effectively. She concluded that “Synergies between actors at all levels are required in order to raise awareness, target energy vulnerable citizens, utilize European funds to de-risk investments and to overcome initial capital barrier, split-incentives etc.”

The last part of the workshop was the Q &A session, where the speakers discussed on the issues and the questions posed by the participants of the workshop.

Dr. Hanan Albuflasa, Assistant Professor at Department of Physics, University of Bahrain, was responsible for the moderation of the discussion throughout the workshop, and she made sure the main questions that were raised by the attendees to be answered by the speakers.

RESTORE READY CONFERENCE IN ATHENS

The RESTORE conference will take place online in Athens, on Friday March 12th 2021, hosting speakers and experts from around EU.

Cost Restore is an EU-funded pan-European network with over 150 researchers from 40 countries.

The central interest of the conference will be on how sustainability can be redefined in order to have a regenerative economy. WRAP-UP OF THE ONLINE EVENT “BUILDBACKBETTER GREECE”

The online discussion #BUILDBACKBETTER GREECE was held on Thursday February 25th 2021 and the discussion lasted 90′. The event was organised by the Build Back Better Greece initiative, with the support of Energy Democracy Dialogues and INZEB. The sustainable recovery by engaging all stakeholders with commitment and effective participation in the overall restart effort, in terms of sustainability and real progress was the main issue at stake of the discussion.

The following contributed to the discussion: Dr. Haris Doukas, Assoc. Professor NTUA, Prof. Arthοuros Zervos, Chairman REN21, Dr. Alexandra Papadopoulou, Chem. Engineer NTUA, Dr. Ioannis Tsipouridis, Managing Director R.E.D. Pro Consultants & Visiting Prof. Technical University of Mombasa (TUM), Nikos Charalampidis, Managing Director of Greenpeace Greece, while the discussion was coordinated by Alice Corovessi, Managing Director of INZEB. Additionally, important in the development of the discussion turned out to be the contribution of the 120 participants who posed questions to the speakers.

In the context of the event review, below are presented the key points raised by the speakers.

Dr. Haris Doukas analysed the meaning and the background of the term “build back better”, spoke about the social, environmental and economic damage caused by the pandemic, while stated that “we want to be a catalyst for synergies and initiatives for a sustainable involvement and commitment under ciscumstances of viability and true progress in an effort of total restart”.

Prof. Zervos highlighted the dimension of proper prioritisation, outlining the foundations that need to be layed in the energy sector, while he suggested “Transition from lignite to RES and not to gas. The Aegean is a privileged region for the production of hydrogen from RES.”

Dr. Alexandra Papadopoulou stated that “Long-term, integrated energy and climate planning, implementing multilevel governance, is key for local government to organize its actions.”, focusing her speech on the obligations, needs and difficulties of municipalities to draw up a long-term plan in the energy sector.

Then Mr. Charalambidis took the floor and stressed out that “The decisions that the Greek government will make today will define the “tomorrow” that we will all live. Going back to the past cannot be an option. Now is the time for brave decisions and radical changes that will build a sustainable and fair tomorrow for all. The European Recovery Fund must be the starting point for a new beginning, not a way back to yesterday.” pointing out at the same time the key role of society so that we have a sustainable and green future, where society as a whole is part of the solution and not of the problem.

“It is remarkable that our children tell us over and over again “listen to science”. They use in us the logic of education that we used. They tell us in their own way “take care”.”, said Dr. Tsipouridis and pointed out the importance of changing energy sources and the way in which they are used and consumed, characterizing the practice so far as wasteful and unconcerned about the consequences, while also giving special importance to the social dimension of the problem.

This was followed by a fruitful discussion between the speakers, answering key questions posed by the audience.

THE FIRST WOMEN’S ENERGY COMMUNITY IN GREECE COMING IN SPRING

The first women’s Energy Community in Greece, will be established in spring. The implementation of this initiative was undertaken by Alice Corovessi, Managing Director of INZEB, in collaboration with S.E.G.E and ELECTRA Energy Cooperative, while interest in participating in this project has been already expressed by 50 women from the regions of Central Macedonia, Crete and Peloponnese.

Speaking to APE-MPE, Alice Corovessi stated that those interested in participating in the energy community, cover all age categories, “with particular interest showed by women entrepreneurs close to 50, more familiar to the concept of energy communities and the importance of the benefit that will result for themselves and their businesses “. She also pointed out that “there is still time for more women to participate, since the expression of interest will be valid until March”.

Energy community’s aim will be to boost individual / family incomes, local entrepreneurship, solidarity economy, in terms of energy democracy, which is an emerging social tendency, in order to offset the fossil fuels energy agenda through the energy transition to more environmentally friendly energy types.

UPGRADED BUILDINGS – CONFERENCE 2021

INZEB will be at “Upgraded Buildings” conference,
which will take place on Wednesday 24th February 2021, online.

The Greek Ministry of the Environment and Energy launched a new funding program for the renovation of household buildings according to the National Plan for increasing the number of nearly zero energy buildings. The new program promotes not only creative reconstruction works, but also the incorporation of smart systems and EV charging stations leading to truly upgraded buildings!

Upgraded Buildings Conference 2021 presents the novel technologies and latest trends in the field of renewable energy production, energy saving and smart systems application in residential buildings of Greece.

Some of the topics that will be discussed during the conference are:

• “Saving energy at Home- Getting Independent” program of the Greek Ministry for the Environment and Energy, additional funding due to the current pandemic situation
• Financing possibilities and support via institutions, e.g. the Hellenic Development Bank

ENERGY POVERTY – A MULTIDIMENSIONAL GLOBAL PHENOMENON

The phenomenon of energy poverty and the resolution of the problems induced by it on modern society constitute a challenge on global scale. Energy poverty is a pressing problem affected by the complicated interaction of multiple factors – the increase of energy prices, people’s inability to pay their energy bills, flat or failing income, high levels of unemployment and the slow pace at which implementation of energy-efficient measures in residencies is taking place. The evidence-based, adverse effects of the aforementioned interaction are felt on social, environmental, and financial levels. The way to tackle the problem has yet to be paved.

In developing countries, energy poverty is primarily experienced as lack of access to basic energy services. According to estimates published by the International Energy Agency (IEA), more than 1.3 billion people do not have access to electricity and consequently lack access to services and provisions that the rest of the population take for granted. According to the United Nations statistics, another important aspect of the problem is that 1 billion people have access to energy services and provisions albeit unreliable.

The fact that approximately 20% of the global population is deprived of access to electricity reflects the prevalence of energy poverty on global scale as well as the magnitude of the problems stemming from this predicament.

Across developed countries, among which Member States of the European Union, the concept of energy poverty is perceived differently. In these countries energy poverty mainly suggests permanent or temporary inability to access energy services and provisions. It is estimated that more than 50 million households in the E.U, equating 10% of the population, struggle with the phenomenon and its implications according to the European Union’s Energy Poverty Observatory (EPOV).

A HOLISTIC POLICY FOR ENERGY POVERTY IN GREECE

ENACT, in one of its latest articles, presented the results of the survey conducted by INZEB and Heinrich Böll Stiftung Greece, to 691 households across Greece’s diverse climatic, geographical and economic zones, which indicated that a new plan is required for tackling energy poverty in Greece.

Public awareness, energy efficiency and uptake of renewable energy: prioritising action in these three areas is key to a new ‘Energy Poverty Action Plan’ for Greece.

The results of this survey released the public’s views on energy poverty, energy costs in proportion to their income, and their view on how often they experience “thermal discomfort”.

On 25th of September 2015, at the United Nations Summit on Sustainable Development, more than 150 Heads of State adopted the 2030 Agenda, which includes, among other things, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030, such as eradicating poverty, hunger, and inequality, combating the climate crisis and protecting the environment, as well as improving access to health and education. The goal of climate change is considered very critical, due to its great impact on the other SDGs but also due to its obvious negative effects in many countries.

The importance of the goal of climate change is evidenced by relevant commitments, such as the goal set by the EU in December 2019, in the context of the European Green Deal, to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. Respective commitments for climate neutrality followed a year later, in 2020, when Japan and South Korea announced that by 2050, they would be climate neutral, while China set the same goal for 2060. The United States are re-entering the climate change mitigation “arena”, as Joe Biden pledged to return to the Paris Agreement Accord from the very first day of his presidency.

But what are the current levels of greenhouse gas emissions and what are the estimates?

For 2020, it is estimated that emissions will be reduced by 6-8%, due to the restrictive measures that emerged as a result of COVID-19. Their exact reduction, however, will depend on the evolution of the pandemic and the relevant measures taken by governments to address it. For example, during the peak of the restrictive measures in early April 2020, global CO2 emissions decreased by 17% compared to 2019. These emissions were equal to the emission levels recorded in 2006, indicative of their rapid rise the last 15 years. A few months later, in early June 2020, global emissions were approaching 2019 emission levels (down to a range of 5%). In 2019 the emissions reached a record high, 37 gigatonnes of CO2 eq, resulting to 62% increase compared to the start of negotiations on climate change in 1990.

To meet the 2030 targets, the emission gap is estimated to be equal to the combined emissions of the six largest polluters in the world (China, America, India, Russia, Japan, Germany). With these data, the goal of the Paris Agreement to maintain the temperature rise to 1.5°C by 2100, seems almost impossible. The average temperature for the period 2016- 2019 is the highest ever recorded. And it is already increased by 1.1°C, compared to the pre-industrial levels of the period 1850-1900, which is the reference period for temperature changes.

In view of the pandemic, the future effects of which are still unknown, what is required is not a superficial recovery. What is required is the activation of all stakeholders, with commitment and effective participation in the effort of total restart in terms of sustainability and real progress. The goal is one and is reflected in an overall aim of Better Reconstruction. Towards this direction, a crucial role will be played mainly by the new generation, the generation of the multidimensional crisis but also of hope, as it is the only one that still has time to succeed and put into practice the #BuildBackBetter.

WRAP UP OF THE ONLINE WORKSHOP “ENERGY COMMUNITIES DISCUSS ABOUT ENERGY COMMUNITIES”

INZEB (within the European project CONGREGATE and the H2020 project POWERPOOR) and ELECTRA Energy Cooperative (within the European project EUCENA) organised on Thursday December 3rd 2020, at 14.30, the online workshop “Energy Communities discuss about Energy Communities. Developments, perspectives, and challenges”, with the support of the Hellenic Office of Greenpeace.

In the first round of the online discussion, the objectives and the framework of the workshop were presented. Emphasis was also placed on the fact that this workshop was the first Energy Democracy Dialogue. Energy Democracy Dialogues is an open platform where energy experts, policymakers, businesses, politicians, academicians, civil society representatives and citizens meet and debate on the critical issue of Energy Democracy. The main aims of the Dialogues are to address the energy transition challenges and to influence the local, regional, national, and continental energy agendas.

Then the floor was given to representatives of Energy Communities (EC) from all over Greece in order to present how they started, their vision, their goals and the challenges they face. The ECs that participated in the event came from rural areas, from islands as well as some of them were active in urban environment. There was also variety in the ECs regarding their size, their dynamic, since when are they active.

The invited experts in the field of ECs significantly contributed to the flow of the discussion. Particularly, participated: Antonia Proka and Stavroula Pappa (RESCOOP), Panagiotis Korkolis (Financial expert, ENA institute), Takis Grigoriou (Hellenic Office of Greenpeace), Agapi Tsampazi (Heinrich Boll), Anastasios Politidis (Msc KALO), Maya Andreou (Community Energy River), Takis Ktenidis (University of West Attica), Dimitris Tsalemis (YPEN), Stelios Psomas (PV Expert) and Miriam Rodriguez Ruiz (ELECTRA Energy Cooperative).

In conclusion, the three main topics discussed and highlighted in this first online discussion between the representatives of ECs, the experts but also through the comments and questions of the approximately 270 participants of the audience were the following:

ECs’ ways of financing and the need for financial instruments
The model of (virtual) net metering, how it works and which would be ideal
Imbalance in the representation of men – women in ECs, need for more female representation and elimination of any racial discrimination.

Thus, this fruitful online discussion not only gave to ECs the opportunity to be heard and presented, highlighting the challenges as well as the plans for the future, but at the same time laid the foundations for future related actions and discussions to be held.

Since the enactment of the law 4513/2018, more than 400 Energy Communities have been established, with the aim of contributing to the energy transition and becoming the vehicles through which citizens, small businesses, and local authorities can have an active role as micro-investors and co-owners of local RES projects.

The workshop “Energy Communities discuss about Energy Communities. Developments, perspectives, and challenges”, for the first time will pave the way through an open discussion, for Energy Communities from all over Greece to present their vision, their plans and to share their concerns and the challenges they face. In addition, the latest developments and issues related to the financing, legislation, and strengthening of the networking and representation of the Energy Communities will be discussed. Experts in the field of Energy Communities have been invited to contribute to the discussion flow, and above all, they will listen and record the results in order to plan the next steps.

The EU Renovation Wave aims to double the EU annual energy renovation rate by 2030 to cut emissions, boost economic recovery and reduce energy poverty. It is a much needed and ambitious initiative, and its implementation calls for accordingly powerful tools and policies, including Building Renovation Passports & Digital Building Logbooks, and a ‘deep renovation’ standard as part of the revision of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD).

iBRoad, funded by Horizon 2020, has successfully delivered and tested Building Renovation Passports and Logbooks for deep renovation. iBRoad has teamed up with several initiatives working on or using such tools and methods. iBRoad’s final conference will provide participants with the opportunity to review and discuss:

The relation of Building Renovation Passports and Digital Building Logbooks with Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs)
The past, present and promising future of these tools
Why public authorities would choose to adopt them and why citizens would want them
What policies can turn Building Renovation Passports into catalysts for investments in renovation

INZEB AT ENERGY POVERTY NATIONAL CONFERENCE

In the framework of the STEP-IN Project (Using Living Labs to roll out Sustainable Strategies for Energy Poor Individuals), which is funded by the Horizon 2020 programme of the European Union, the School of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, NTUA in collaboration with the Regulatory Authority for Energy, is organising the first Energy Poverty Conference in Greece. Preeminent guest speakers from Greece and abroad will participate at the conference and discuss a variety of topics related to the energy poverty phenomenon.

The conference, due to the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, will be held online on November 19, 2020, and its attendance will be free.

WRAP UP OF THE ONLINE EVENT “SMART AND ENERGY EFFICIENT BUILDINGS”

INZEB and GIZ organised on Thursday, October 29, 2020 at 14.00, the online event “Smart and Energy Efficient Buildings”, in which the prospects and the framework for smart and energy efficient buildings in Europe, as well as strategies, political and technological developments in Greece were presented and discussed. The event was part of REDay2020: # Renovate2Recover, organised by the Renovate Europe Campaign.

According to Mr. Ulrich Laumanns, Project Manager, GIZ, we need more ambitious practices and measures to promote Smart and Energy Efficient Buildings, to increase renovation rates and achieve national and European targets by 2030 and beyond. At the same time, he pointed out that renovation strategies must consider specific national characteristics such as climatic conditions or building types. Many challenges related to the scaling-up of the current renovation rates, e.g. increasing the effectiveness of support programs, are however similar across different EU member states. For this reason, there is a significant potential for EU Member States to share and learn from each other’s experiences and best practices in the promotion of smart and energy efficient buildings, as Mr. Laumanns concludes.

Mr. Adrian Joyce, Campaign Director, Renovate Europe Campaign, pointed out the three priorities of renovation according to the European Commission, which are tackling energy poverty and worst-performing buildings, the renovation of public buildings such as schools, hospitals and public administrations and decarbonization of heating and cooling. He also emphasized that Renewable Energy Sources work best in smart and energy efficient buildings.

In her presentation, Ms. Maria Spyraki, MEP, EPP, indicated the low performance of the Member States in terms of energy renovation targets. She pointed out that in order to achieve the goals, we must proceed to a radical renovation of the existing building stock. EU’s buildings are now more than 220 million, as she remarked, and 85% of the building stock was built before 2001 and will be used by 2050. She emphasized the ways to tackle the problem, including creating a sustainable building materials market and the creation of renovation’s waste management market. The need for our buildings to become “smart”, which means to use new technologies, to allow the efficient production and the use of Renewable Energy Sources as well as the need to install smart meters in buildings, was also one of the main topics of her speech.

Mr. Dimitris Athanasiou, DG Energy, European Commission, spoke about the European Green Deal which laid the foundations and the action plan to make Europe climate neutral by 2050 through a series of actions. Buildings, as he pointed out, play a very important role in this as they are among the largest energy consumers. Furthermore, he emphasized the important steps that have been taken in recent years, both at European and national level and lastly that we are moving in the direction of reviewing energy and climate goals.

Mr. Antonis Marinos, Head of Office, Secretariat General for Energy and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Environment and Energy, in his speech reported on the National Plan for Energy and Climate which started with the main goal of de-lignification of electricity production industry, accompanied by other horizontal goals such as sustainable growth and development of the energy sector. He also referred to projects and actions to achieve the savings objectives such as the “Eksoikonomo-Autonomo”, the “Electra” program and energy audits.

Prof. Agis Papadopoulos, Professor of Energy Systems, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, identified intelligent buildings in the sense of content, an intelligent building, as the speaker pointed out, allows the integrated management of E/M systems, the remote diagnosis and adjustment of systems and the ability of the building to communicate with infrastructure networks. He also indicated the need for thorough renovation of buildings in Greece. Finally, he concluded that if we want to have achieved our goals by 2050, we need policies that will make significant breakthroughs.

Dr. Haris Doukas, Assoc. Professor, National Technical University of Athens, in his speech focused on the data dimension. In particular, he referred to the reluctance of investments in energy efficiency due to the lack of confidence in the return on such investments and the risks involved, as well as the lack of commonly accepted standards and procedures for energy efficiency investments, which significantly increase costs. In addition, he spoke about the complexity of the building sector, the lack and low quality of data, which, as he pointed out, creates problems in costs, enhances complexity and uncertainty.

Last, Mrs Alice Corovessi, Managing Director, INZEB, presented the H2020 SMAFIN project, which kicked off on September 1, 2020. Its primary goal is the constructive connection of “smart financing” with the renovation of energy efficient buildings in the Balkans and the creation of a complete roundtable methodology. Following the successful experience of the Sustainable Energy Investment Forums’ (SEIFs), the SMAFIN project plans to organise 12 national roundtable discussions in the 4 participating Balkan countries of the project – Bulgaria, Greece, Croatia, Romania – in order to bring together knowledge, practices and EU policymakers, national and local authorities as well as key players in the financial, business, construction and academia sectors to effectively facilitate investment in the renovation of energy efficient buildings.

The presentations were followed by a fruitful discussion between speakers and participants, with the aim of a deeper analysis of what was said.

WRAP UP OF THE ONLINE EVENT “THE VALUE OF ENERGY MANAGEMENT PRACTICES IN THE BUSINESS SECTOR”

INZEB and The Hellenic-Dutch Association of Commerce and Industry (HeDA) organised on Thursday, October 15, 2020, at 14.00, the online event “The Value of Energy Management Practices in the Business Sector”, in which the developments and the benefits of an effective Energy Management System (EnMS) within the organisational structures, were presented and discussed.

In his presentation, the Assoc. Professor of NTUA, Dr Haris Doukas, pointed out that industry sectors have made a significant contribution to global gaseous pollutants over time. Dominance of inefficient production processes creates obstacles to the sustainable transition of industries, such as in Germany and the United Kingdom. Emission reduction requirements and lack of immediate alternatives make energy management necessary, in order to reduce production costs and improve the environmental footprint of the industrial sector.

Dr Alexandra Papadopoulou, Chemical Engineer, NTUA, CEA-I, focused through her presentation on the need for energy management, and the role that energy management systems can play, in view of the different standards that can be applied. The main steps of implementation of such a system in companies as well as the relative benefits from their use were presented, while reference was made to the current situation in Greece.

Alice Corovessi, Managing Director at INZEB, presented the results of the survey that conducted in 100 small and medium enterprises. The aim of this research was to identify the level of awareness of small and medium-sized enterprises and organisations regarding the benefits arising from the conduct of energy audits and the implementation of energy management systems, such as identifying the greatest potential for energy savings in a business, and thus helping to reduce energy costs, improve profitability and enhance competitiveness.

Finally, Giannis Tsonis, Technical Operations Director at AΒ Vassilopoulos, presented the energy profile of the company, the implemented energy management and energy saving actions as well as the intentions of the organization for the new actions that will be implemented, with the aim of further reduction of energy consumption.

The fruitful discussion that followed, indicated and highlighted the urgent need for energy management in the business sector through a holistic approach, projecting not only the problem and the need but also the solutions and the benefits of the implementation of such systems.

SMART & ENERGY EFFICIENT BUILDINGS

The concept of Smart and Energy Efficient Buildings aims to replace the standard building systems. The concept has gained the support of various involved interested parties coming from the public and private sector.

Specifically and according to the report published by IDATE DigiWorld: “Smart home and smart building market” [April 2017], smart buildings are an expected growing market with a moderate growth of 15% between 2015 and 2025. Translating the percentage into volume, the installed base of Smart Home and Smart Building devices will grow from 233 to over 980 million units by 2025.

In this frame, GIZ and INZEB are organising an online event entitled “Smart & Energy Efficient Buildings” scheduled for Thursday 29 October 2020 at 14.00 with a duration of 120’. The perspectives and the frame for smart and energy-efficient buildings in Europe, as well as the strategies, policies and technology developments in Greece are the main topics to be presented and discussed during the event.

The event is part of the REDay2020: #Renovate2Recover which is organised by Renovate Europe Campaign.

On 29 January 2020, the European Commission’s new work programme was published. Under the first priority – ‘a European Green Deal’, the Commission announced its intention to launch a ‘renovation wave’ initiative in the buildings sector. According to the work programme, this initiative should be adopted in the third quarter of 2020. Currently, only around 1 % of buildings in the EU are renovated each year. A faster rate of renovation is necessary to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

CLIMATE CHANGE, ENERGY AND THE GREEK ENVIRONMENT

As the European Union moves forward with formulating the European Green Deal, including a 2050 decarbonisation target, related reviews, ambition increases and updates of the 2030 National energy and climate plans (NECPs) are underway in EU countries. Greece is no exception as it moves ahead with its design and implementation of corresponding policies and measures.

However, these policies must promote a “just transition” and be socially accepted in order to be effective and robust. Ideally, citizens should take part in the selection of these policies, by being informed and expressing their preferences on the available options.

The PARIS REINFORCE project, along with the Hellenic Society for the Environment and Culture and the Convergences Greece Forum, co-organise a national stakeholder workshop on climate change, energy and the national context, aiming to explore the available alternatives, on Tuesday, January 28, 2020, while giving the opportunity to stakeholders from industry, government and the civil society to get informed, discuss, raise concerns and help decide the way forward.

INZEB is contributing to the workshop with a presentation at the thematic session “Sustainable Energy Design – Technologies and Policies”.

BIMEET – BUILDING GREEN EXPO 2019

Within the Building Greece Expo 2019, in Athens – Greece, CRES is organising an event entitled “Energy saving in buildings – applications, projects and the use of BIM as a tool” which is scheduled to take place on Friday 18 October 2019 at 17:00.

The purpose of the event is to present:

- - - - the capabilities of the BIM tool to achieve energy savings in buildings;
        
        the role of BIM in the design of smart buildings;
        
        concrete examples of interventions and good practices that contribute to this goal.

The event is organised within the framework of the BIMEET EU funded project. BIMEET (BIM-based EU -wide Standardized Qualification Framework for achieving Energy Efficiency) project aims to leverage the take-up of ICT and BIM through a significant upgrade of the skills and capacities of the EU construction workforce.
BIMEET will develop skills matrices related to BIM and energy-efficiency. The description of skills will be given in the form of the European Qualifications Framework. BIMEET will also develop a training platform which will support registering labelled training offering and finding suitable BIM training in different levels of Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector.
INZEB supports the event and will contribute with two presentations delivered by Alice Corovessi, COO/CFO at INZEB and Eleftheria Touloupaki, Scientific Associate at INZEB.

SET Plan: STAKEHOLDERS MEETING IN THESSALONIKI

On the initiative of the Directorate-General for Energy of the European Commission, the Region of Central Macedonia, the Regional Development Fund of Central Macedonia and INZEB organize a workshop on the presentation of the Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan) in Thessaloniki, Greece.

The event will take place on Tuesday 19 February 2019 and will be held at the Electra Palace Thessaloniki (Macedonia meeting room).

The SET Plan aims to accelerate and widely deploy low carbon technologies, improve them and reduce their costs by coordinating national research efforts and supporting project financing. The plan encourages cooperation among the Member States, companies, research institutes and the EU itself.

The workshop is aimed at all organizations with an interest in the SET Plan. Key stakeholders from public and private sectors will be invited (Public Authorities, Academia, Researchers and Research Institutions, R&D labs etc.).

Mrs Andy Kontoudakis is the speaker appointed by DG Energy, who will present the SET Plan and will participate in a discussion with the participants. The workshop is expected to have a duration of approximately 4 hours (10.00 -14.00).

SUSTAINABILITY & RESILIENCE: OPTION OR PREREQUISITE FOR REAL ESTATE?

The session entitled “Sustainability & Resilience: Option or Prerequisite for Real Estate?” will be organised by INZEB within the framework of the 19th Prodexpo, which will take place on November 1st, 2018 at 17:00 at the Megaron – the Athens Concert Hall.

The focus of the session, which is organised by INZEB and is supported by the Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), is on developing a broader understanding of how the real estate will contribute to more resilient cities and buildings and explain its role as a modern means of green diplomacy. The panel discussion will explore economics, sociology, policies and conditions for future-proofing developments. The session will provide perspectives from planners, technologists, economists, ecologists, and developers. The objective is to recognize that resilient and future-proofing buildings are a critical step of the roadmap to sustainable and prosperous communities.

Climate change is setting the world against unpredictable challenges at increasing intensities—natural disasters, ecological uncertainty, public health crises, extreme social inequity, rising violence—and yet counters and absorbs risk through acts of resilience. The impacts of climate change are known, and the built environment leads the charge when it comes to planning for a resilient future.

Regulatory risks related to climate change have become increasingly evident, including mandatory disclosure, building codes and laws banning inefficient buildings. Extreme weather events and systematic changes in weather patterns affect the insurability of real estate and lead to questions about the resilience of assets. Changing tenant preferences for green building and investor screening on portfolio sustainability risks lead to market risk related to sustainability factors. This will translate into the risk of obsolescence for poorly-performing developments.

It is the lack of action to adopt climate change adaptation strategies that is the true threat to real-estate; engaging with the problem and mounting solutions represents not only a duty to stakeholders but also a boon for economic growth. While many real estate developers continue to focus chiefly on financial risk management in response to climate change, others are realising that a more proactive, holistic approach to the issue presents significant opportunities to grow revenues, reduce risk and improve brand value.

Some crucial questions that will be discussed in this section, with a view find the initial answers, are:

Can real estate afford the cost of non-compliance?
How will real-estate be affected?
How cities will become more resilient to defend the stresses of climate change?
How a sustainable and future-proofing built environment will benefit cities and citizens?

SET Plan MEETING IN ATHENS

On the initiative of DG Energy of the European Commission, and in collaboration with INZEB, the SET Plan workshop in Athens took place on Thursday 12 July 2018.

The Strategic Energy Technology (SET) Plan has been the research and innovation pillar of the EU’s energy and climate policy since 2007. It was revised in 2015 to effectively line up with the EU’s Energy Union research and innovation priorities.

It coordinates low-carbon research and innovation activities in the EU Member States and other participating countries (Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Turkey).

The SET-Plan helps structuring European and national research programmes and triggers substantial investments on common priorities in low-carbon technologies.

The aim of the workshop that took place in Athens was to inform the interested parties about the possibilities offered by the SET Plan to the research community both in terms of funding and available resources, as well as in the co-operation of researchers and research oorganisations among the countries participating in the platform. The SET Plan presentation was delivered by Andy Kontoudakis, Policy Officer at DG Energy.

The workshop was moderated by Alice Corovessi, INZEB and Dr Haris Doukas, Assistant Professor, NTUA. Representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Energy, CRES, NTUA, NKUA, University of West Attica, the National Documentation Center, HEDNO, Attiki Natural Gas Distribution Company, the Regional Development Fund of Central Macedonia, the Greek Center for Marine Research. Praxi Network as well as consulting companies and energy – focused start-ups were present and contributed to the discussion.

INZEB AT THE ANNUAL IENE CONFERENCE

With more than 100 participants from Greece and other European countries and 25 speakers and panelists IENE’s one day conference on “Investing in Energy Efficiency”, which was held in Athens last week (24/5) proved a great success as it helped to highlight the serious challenges and opportunities that are now being created in the field of energy efficiency especially in the building and industrial sector. INZEB was invited to participate in the 4th session of the conference entitled “Energy poverty in Europe and Greece”. In particular, in this section presented:

WORKSHOP: THE BUSINESS CASE FOR ICP EUROPE CERTIFICATION

A two-hour workshop on “The Business Case for ICP Europe Certification: Unlocking Capital for Energy Efficiency Projects” is scheduled to take place within the framework of the 18th Prodexpo taking at the Grand Bretagne Hotel on 17 and 18 October 2017. The workshop is scheduled for Wednesday 18 October 2017 at 14.30-16.30 and is organized by Prodexpo in cooperation with INZEB

The objective of the workshop is to inform interested parties and Greek stakeholders regarding the ICP Europe certification, which is an international framework for reducing owner and investor risk, lowering due diligence costs, increasing the certainty of savings achievement and enabling aggregation.

Workshop presenters are Dave Worthington, member of the Executive Committee of ICP Europe and Alice Corovessi, INZEB’s founding member, and COO.

Renovation Workshop by INZEB.ORG

The Institute of Zero Energy Buildings – INZEB.ORG, National Supporting Partner of Renovate Europe Campaign, during and in the context of the Green Building Expo 2014, organized the first interactive workshop on energy reduction, looking specifically at the renovation of two apartments in Greece, one in Florina (northern Greece) and one in Athens. The workshop aim was that all the participants (architects, civil and mechanical engineers) would brainstorm and work together towards finding energy saving solutions which would lead to the reduction of the apartments’ energy consumption. The process and the results of this first workshop are being presented here, where one can see the energy consumption of the apartments before any intervention, the suggested solutions, the results of the suggested solutions and the Return of Investment in the energy upgrading of the two apartments.

RENOVALUE PILOT TRAINING IN NICOSIA, CYPRUS

RenoValue is a 2-year project funded by the Intelligent Energy Europe Programme of the European Union. The project has developed a training toolkit for property valuation professionals on how to factor energy efficiency and renewable energy issues into valuation practices, understand the impact of building performance and property values and advise their clients accordingly.

Within the project, several pilot trainings have been planned to take place across Europe. The next scheduled training will take place in Nicosia, Cyprus, on Friday 18 March 2016 in Pralina Cafe (Stasikratous 31) from 09:00-15:00. The training will be delivered in Greek language.
